Transport and Fuel Monitoring in the Oil & Gas Industry

Transport and Fuel Monitoring in the Oil & Gas Industry

The oil & gas industry is one of the most technologically complex and capital-intensive sectors, where efficiency and operational safety play a crucial role. A large number of specialized heavy machinery is involved in oil and gas extraction, transportation, and processing, including drilling rigs, pumping stations, fuel tankers, pipe layers, crew transport vehicles, and other types of assets. Many facilities operate in remote areas under extreme temperatures and stringent explosion protection requirements.

To ensure efficient management of heavy machinery and fuel, Omnicomm offers a comprehensive solution that helps reduce operational costs, enhance safety, minimize fuel losses, and ensure reliable transport operations, even under the most challenging conditions. The most relevant solutions for the oil & gas industry include:

Solution Components

Omnicomm’s solutions provide comprehensive control over fuel consumption and heavy machinery operations at oil & gas facilities. Installing fuel level sensors ensures accurate fuel consumption tracking and prevents theft. GPS-trackers record equipment location, mileage, operational parameters, and usage time.

For sites with strict safety requirements, explosion-proof equipment compliant with international ATEX standards is available. This is particularly important for use in oil refineries, fuel storage facilities, and drilling rigs.

To support operations in remote regions, Omnicomm solutions work in areas without cellular coverage, allowing data storage and transmission via specialized hardware and software solutions.

Additionally, integration with corporate ERP systems and monitoring platforms enables seamless data consolidation within a unified enterprise information environment, automating operational accounting.

Achieved Results

The implementation of Omnicomm solutions in the oil & gas industry significantly enhances machinery efficiency, reduces fuel costs, and minimizes risks. Companies using the monitoring system achieve the following results:

Fuel consumption reduction by 25-35%
through fuel theft prevention and engine optimization
Reduction in machine downtime by 30-50%
due to real-time condition monitoring and timely maintenance
Compliance with explosion protection and safety standards
by using certified equipment

Frequently asked questions

Do I need an explosion-proof fuel sensor?

You need an explosion-proof sensor like LLS-Ex 5 if you are monitoring fuel tankers, oil depots, gas stations, chemical plants, mining operations, or any ATEX-zoned hazardous environment. LLS-Ex 5 is ATEX-certified, offers 5,000V galvanic isolation via the BIS-MX spark protection unit, and comes in lengths up to 6 meters, the longest in the OMNICOMM portfolio.

ATEX zone classification splits hazardous areas into three categories based on how often explosive atmospheres are present. Zone 0 is continuous (inside a fuel tank itself), Zone 1 is occasional (around tank vents, fuel transfer points), and Zone 2 is rare (general site areas where a leak might occur). Equipment installed in any of these zones must carry matching certification, and using a non-rated sensor is a safety and insurance violation, not just a regulatory one. LLS-Ex 5 is rated for Zones 0, 1, and 2, and must be connected through the BIS-MX spark protection unit, which provides the 5,000V galvanic isolation that limits energy in the sensor circuit to non-ignition levels. LLS-Ex 5 is available in 1500, 2000, 2500, 3000, 4000, 5000, and 6000 mm lengths for global markets, covering everything from medium tankers to large depot storage. The sensor itself carries a lifetime warranty, and the BIS-MX carries 3 years.

Can a fuel monitoring system track stationary fuel tanks, generators, and depots?

Yes. OMNICOMM equips far more than vehicles. Stationary applications include gas stations, fuel depots, generator tanks for telecom towers and data centers, pumping stations, boilers, and tank farms. ATEX-certified LLS-Ex 5 sensors paired with the BIS-MX spark protection unit cover hazardous zones up to 6 meters deep. ICON Display and LLD Indicator give on-site readouts for operators.

Telecom operators in emerging markets manage thousands of tower sites powered by diesel generators, and fuel theft from those generators is a major cost line; OMNICOMM sensors on the generator day-tank or main reservoir give the operator real-time levels and theft alerts. Data centers run backup diesel generators that must have guaranteed fuel availability; precision sensors prevent the silent drift toward empty that paper-based monitoring cannot catch. Gas stations and depots use LLS-Ex 5 sensors in the ATEX-rated underground tanks to track inventory, reconcile deliveries against actual received volume, and detect leaks. For agricultural and construction operations, the on-site fuel tanker that distributes fuel to equipment is itself monitored to ensure that what the depot reports dispensing matches what the receiving equipment reports getting. Silver Spark Apparel in India deployed OMNICOMM sensors on factory generators specifically to prevent production-line downtime, with avoided losses calculated at around $30,000 per hour of prevented downtime.

What certifications and quality standards does OMNICOMM hold?

OMNICOMM products are certified to ISO 9001:2015 (quality management), ATEX (explosive atmospheres), E-Mark (European vehicle components), FCC (US electromagnetic compatibility), CE (European conformity), and EAC. The company holds 30+ patents including the OMNICOMM LLS protocol, which became an industry standard. In 2020, Frost & Sullivan awarded OMNICOMM the Growth, Innovation & Leadership Award in connected truck telematics.

Each certification matters for a specific market and use case. ISO 9001:2015 covers the quality management system across design, manufacturing, and support, and is the baseline for any large corporate or government procurement. ATEX (specifically for LLS-Ex 5 sensors with BIS-MX) is required for any installation in hazardous areas such as fuel tankers, depots, gas stations, refineries, mining sites, and chemical plants. Operating without ATEX certification in these zones violates insurance terms and creates personal liability for site managers. E-Mark is the European vehicle component type-approval, required for any sensor or tracker installed on a road-going vehicle in the EU. FCC is the US equivalent for electromagnetic compatibility. CE is the European conformity mark covering safety, health, and environmental requirements. EAC is the Eurasian Economic Union equivalent. The Frost & Sullivan 2020 Growth, Innovation & Leadership Award recognized OMNICOMM for the combination of high-end fuel sensors, hardware terminals, and a highly scalable cloud platform, citing the company as a pioneer driving innovation in connected truck telematics.
